Fit-For-Fun
Fitness
Opportunity
For Youth Programs and Home Schools

Fit-For-Fun is Minnesota’s
first and largest school-based youth training program. The
program began in 1988 and its vision has always been based on
providing elementary aged children with not only the opportunity to
develop aerobic endurance, but to educate them as to why it is
important to keep themselves fit, strong, and healthy. This
cognitive component is what makes Fit-for-Fun different from most of
its contemporaries. While many races today have children’s events,
not many have cognitive, fitness development and race components.
Fit-For-Fun is a perfect
fitness/physical education curriculum offering for home schooled
children as well as any youth based organization interested in
adding an already existing youth fitness training program model to
their programs. It not only addresses the physical education
domain, but also crosses into the health education curriculum
areas. It works great for home schooled and youth organizations in
that no gym or exercise space is required, just good old fresh air
and a safe running path or course. Another nice feature that is
attractive to home schooled children is the planning and support
provided. Someone is always available to help provide practice
ideas and training tips.
The Fit-For-Fun Program has an
accompanying coach’s curriculum, as well as a parent handbook.
The goal of each is to provide coaches and parents with the
knowledge and tools necessary to guide children toward the healthy
and well lifestyle so absent today.
The goal and most fun part of the
Fit-For-Fun program for kids is registering and running in the
Get-In-Gear 2K On Saturday, April 26th. Fit-For-Fun kids receive a
$2 discount on all registrations and scholarships are provided to
all children who cannot afford the $13 registration fee.
All coaches receive a free
special coach’s gift for bringing a team of runners to the 2K
event.
All 2K participants receive a
t-shirt, finisher medal and can partake in all post event food and
activities. In addition all Fit-For-Fun kids, whether they run
the 2K or not, receive a special training reward.
Fit-For-Fun is celebrating its
21th anniversary on April 26, 2008. Over the years the
Get-In-Gear Fit-For-Fun Youth Running Program has involved over 70
schools and helped nearly 50,000 children achieve higher
levels of health and self-esteem.
The Fit-For-Fun youth running
program was awarded the 1998 Award of Excellence from the
Minnesota Council on Physical Activity and Sports for its
outstanding promotion of fitness, wellness and health for
Minnesota’s children.
Fit -For-Fun was created in 1988
in response to the burgeoning crisis in youth wellness. Elementary
physical education programs alone cannot provide school-aged
children the amount of movement opportunities to appropriately meet
the challenges of changing lifestyles for both children and their
parents. The goal of Fit-For-Fun is to treat kids (and their
parents) to a fun, educational running experience (including an
actual race event, the Get-In-Gear 2K) with the hope of encouraging
continued running and racing long after the Fit-For-Fun Program and
the Get-In-Gear 2K event are over.

The Fit-For-Fun program has always
been a part of the kick-off to the Minnesota running season which
traditionally begins with its sister event, the Get in Gear 10K, as
“Minnesota’s Annual Rite of Spring.”
We are broadening our goal to
reach beyond only the traditional elementary schools and
extending our reach to all youth based organizations and home school
associations to participate in our excellent and proven model of
fitness training. We invite you to sign up for the Get in Gear Fit-For-Fun youth training program today.
